July 2020 has brought good news for dogs with the government of Nagaland putting a ban on the commercial sale and import of dogs and dog meat. Close to 30,000 dogs used to be brought into Nagaland illegally every year to be sold for their meat.

In March 2020 another North-Eastern state of India, Mizoram, had taken a step to end its dog meat trade. It amended a state law by removing dogs from the list of ‘animals suitable to slaughter’.
While Animal activists are cheering, some people believe it is putting a limit on the cultural food habits of the region.
