This brown sweet substance is called gur (or gud) in Hindi and jaggery in English. It is a popular ingredient in Indian sweets, specially those made in winter months. Kids and adults also like to have pieces of it by itself.
Do you like gud?
It is healthier than white sugar and you can try and replace the use of white sugar in your kitchen with jaggery.
What is jaggery made of?
It can be made from dates and sugarcare. Most of the jaggery used comes from sugarcane.
Sugarcane juice is boiled slowly while being stirred continuously. This process creates gud in a powdery form.
Refined (white) sugar only has empty calories that have almost zero nutritional value, but jaggery is rich in essential nutrients such as Iron, Potassium and Calcium.
