India's Newest UT Gets State Bird and Animal

One of India’s newest Union Territories (UT), Ladakh has declared the black-necked crane and snow leopard as its State Bird and State Animal. The declaration has come almost two years after Indian President, Ram Nath Kovind, passed legislation bifurcating the state of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) into two UTs– Ladakh and J&K.

What is a Union Territory?

A Union Territory is a type of special administrative zone in India that governed by the Union (Central) Government of India. Other Indian states have their own state government in addition to India's federal (Central) government. There are currenly 8 UTs in India.
