Salazar The Snake - By Student Reporter Palak Chowdhury

This article has been written by Pink Buzz Student Reporter, Palak Chowdhury, Age 13, Nalanda International School, Vadodara.

If you are a Potterhead you would have recognized Salazar as the name of one of the co-founders of Hogwarts. For those who aren’t such Harry Potter fans, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is a fictional school in the Harry Potter books’ series by J.K. Rowling.

A bright green viper that was recently discovered in the forests of Arunachal Pradesh in India has been named after Salazar Slytherin. The Indian scientists who named this snake chose this character as it has the ability to talk to snakes in the books series. The reptile’s scientific name is Trumeresurus Salazar and it will commonly be known as Salazar's Pit Viper.

This venomous snake is mostly green in colour.  It may have yellow, black, orange, red or gold markings on its body too. This new species was reported in a scientific journal (Zoosystematics and Evolution) in April, 2020.

Although this serpent doesn't possess any magical powers, discovering new living things on the planet is always cool! Let us hope someone names the next new find ‘Phoenix’!
