On the night of 26th April, the moon looked especially big, bright and golden. If you saw this it was 2021's first supermoon, the Super Pink Moon!
The moon revolves around the earth in an elliptical orbit, sometimes moving closer and sometimes far away from us. A supermoon is seen when a full moon comes closest to the earth (at a distance of 356,907 kilometers) and the sun, moon and earth fall in a straight line to each other.
Scientifically, this is known as perigee-syzygy, though we think the name supermoon sounds way cooler!
The Super Pink Moon was visible on the night between 26th and 27th April from different parts of the world. If you missed it, it can be seen till the night of the 28th of April, though it will be slightly smaller.
While this supermoon was named the Pink Moon, the moon didn’t really turn pink in colour! The name actually comes from a certain pink flower (Phlox subulata) popularly known as moss phlox, which blooms during the April full moon in parts of North America.
For those who missed out on this one, the next supermoon will appear on 26th May, 2021.
A supermoon appears larger and more beautiful than the normal full moon due to something called an optical illusion which tricks the eye!
