Wangchuk's Warm Invention

Ladakhi engineer, innovator and education reformer, Sonam Wangchuk revealed the prototype of a unique solar-heated tent on social media on February 19, 2021. His team at the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL) has developed the model tent for use by the soldiers of the Indian Army stationed in cold and high-altitude areas.

Exhibiting its insular properties in his tweet, Sonam noted how temperatures inside the tent stood at 15 °Celsius at 10 pm when the minimum temperature outside was -14°Celsius.

There is a popular Hindi movie made loosely on the early life of Sonam Wangchuk. It is a tale of three friends in an engineering college and how their life unfolds. The main character has a lot of similarities with Wangchuk’s life and is portrayed by Bollywood’s Amir Khan. Can you name this movie?

Wangchuk stated that the tent can accommodate 10 security personnel and is fully portable, weighing less than 30 kgs. This tent is the world’s first solar heated tent for military use. It is eco-friendly and its use will replace the burning of a large amount of fossil fuel that is currently used at high-altitudes to keep enclosures warm for soldiers.

Do you know what a prototype is?

A prototype is an early sample, model, or release of a product built to test a concept or process.
