Word Of The Year 2020

The Collins Dictionary has declared the word Lockdown the word of the year 2020. Collins recorded a 6,000% increase of the use of the word since 2019. 

Lockdown (noun): the imposition of stringent restrictions on travel, social interaction, and access to public spaces                                                          -definition by Collins 

The data analyzed includes written material from websites, books and newspapers as well as audio content from television, radio and conversations. 

Oxford Children’s Word of the Year

The Oxford Children’s Dictionaries & Language Data team at Oxford University Press have identified the 2020 Oxford Children’s Word of the Year as ‘coronavirus'. The data analyzed for this was more than 134,000 stories that children sent in for an annual writing competition in Britain. 

Previous Children’s Word of the Year include Brexit (2019) and plastic (2018), indicating the influence of global affairs on children’s creativity. 

Here are some other terms that have become widely used since the Covid-19 pandemic began. 

  1. Pandemic: An infectious disease that spreads across more than one continent. 
  2. Anosmia: The loss of the ability to detect one or more types of smell. 
  3. Antigen: An antigen is any substance that causes your immune system to produce a fighting response against it. An antigen is usually found on or in disease or allergy causing bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms. An antigen may be a substance from the environment, such as chemicals, bacteria, viruses, or pollen. 
  4. Antibody: It is a substance produced by our immune system in response to a disease-causing agent. All antibodies are Y-shaped proteins.
